Volkan Öktem, The Dream of Rhythm
A drumming passion that began in Izmir, with collaborations stretching from Tarkan to Grammy-winning artists... Blending traditional Turkish melodies with jazz and funk, Volkan Öktem continues to enchant music lovers with Laco Tayfa and "#7"!
I see Volkan Öktem as one of Turkey's leading drummers and jazz musicians, born in İzmir on 25 June 1970. I have learned that his interest in music began early, around the age of 7, and that by the age of 11 he had started playing drums alongside military musicians at the local Officers' Club, gaining his first musical experiences there. I believe these early experiences enabled him to develop his sense of rhythm and to lay the foundations of his own distinctive style.
Education and Musical Development
Although the detailed information I could find on Volkan Öktem's formal music education is limited, my research has uncovered important details about the beginnings and unfolding of his musical life. I learned that, following his move to Ankara in 1985, he had the chance to work with the popular rock and pop bands of the day, and even shared the stage with the renowned singer Alpay for three years. During this period he performed at various nightclubs, working through a wide repertoire that included traditional Turkish music, which I imagine deepened his familiarity with very different genres. One point that caught my attention is that his interest in jazz brought him into a series of jazz concerts alongside important musicians such as the pianists Tuna Ötenel and Janusz Szprot. In my view, these experiences contributed both to Öktem becoming known on the music scene and to the development of his own distinctive understanding of jazz. I see his move to Istanbul in 1994 as marking the start of a new chapter in his career.
Musical Career and Notable Projects
Once Volkan Öktem had settled in Istanbul, I learned that he played on more than 100 albums with many famous artists, including Sezen Aksu, Fahir Atakoğlu and Nilüfer. That is an impressive achievement! He has also performed around the world with international musicians and groups. One of the projects of his that most impressed me is his 1996 founding of the ethnic-jazz group "Habbecik" with six other musicians, his first ethnic-jazz project. I saw that Habbecik released an album entitled "An Meselesi" and performed at a variety of music festivals. In the same year, together with friends, he founded the jazz-fusion group Trio Mrio, which later — with the addition of another member — became Quartet Muartet and released the albums "9 Parça" and "9 Parça Daha." In 1999 he embarked on what is, for me, one of his most fascinating projects: he founded "Laco Tayfa," a group that blends traditional Turkish music with jazz, funk and reggae, giving him the chance to fully express his own distinctive style. I discovered that with Laco Tayfa he released two albums — "Bergama Gaydası" and "Hicaz Dolap" — and performed at major events such as New York's Central Park and the Istanbul International Jazz Festival.
My research also showed that he played alongside Sertab Erener at numerous local and international concerts during the period when she won the 2002 Eurovision Song Contest. I saw that he appeared on Aşkın Arsunan's album "One a Day" and performed with the Aşkın Arsunan Ethno-Karma Band at the 7th International Istanbul Jazz Festival. I was greatly impressed by the fact that, throughout his career, he has also worked on various projects with important jazz musicians such as John Scofield, Bendik Hofseth, Muvaffak "Muffy" Falay, Dianne Reeves, Okan Ersan and Aydın Esen.
Here is a list of Volkan Öktem's principal groups and solo albums:
Current Musical Activities
It makes me happy to see that Volkan Öktem is still actively pursuing his music career today. I have learned that he has worked for 17 years with Tarkan, one of Turkey's most famous musicians, and has given concerts with him in many cities across Turkey and Europe. In addition, I discovered that he gives concerts with his own group Sonic Boom, tours under the name Volkan Öktem Band, takes part in independent projects, and runs workshop series and masterclasses. His release of his first solo album, "#7," in February 2023 was a thrilling moment for me. Finally, I learned that he has announced a concert with his "#7" project at Babylon in Istanbul on 8 April 2025. In my view, this intense schedule clearly shows Volkan Öktem's active and influential position in the music world.
His Contributions to Music and His Musical Style
I find Volkan Öktem's contributions to music to be highly multifaceted. In my view, his distinctive drumming style, shaped by the experiences he has gathered from an early age, has acquired a personal and original character. I have great respect for his mastery of and versatility across different musical genres. One of the qualities I most admire about him is the way he successfully blends traditional Turkish music with Western styles such as jazz, funk and reggae. I see this as an important part of his musical identity. I consider his work with Laco Tayfa to be the most striking example of this synthesis, and his ethnic-jazz work with Habbecik to be another reflection of this original approach. I view the music Öktem makes with Laco Tayfa as "a new synthesis within the Turkish Roma (Çingene) tradition"; the way he brings regional Turkish folk music together with contemporary world-music styles really impresses me. The fact that he has appeared on more than 200 albums across various Turkish musical genres I take as evidence of his wide and influential presence on the Turkish music scene.
Reviews from Music Critics
During my research, I saw that Volkan Öktem's work has generally been received positively by music critics. They describe him as a successful, well-known drummer and speak admiringly of his collaborations with major jazz artists. I noticed that his mastery of the drums, his inventive melodies and his demanding rhythms have drawn widespread praise. I read that the "#7" album, released in 2023, stands out for its complex drum patterns and rhythmic expertise, combining a thematic approach to composition with modern arrangements and different styles. It made me happy to see that critics describe Laco Tayfa's music as lively and energetic, and praise its blending of traditional Turkish melodies with Western jazz elements. I noticed that some reviews emphasise the group's experimental and innovative approach. It caught my attention that one critic suggested that, over time, the "funky" rhythms could overshadow the rhythmic integrity peculiar to Turkish music. Another review's observation that the fusion works yield better results with modal improvisation offered me a different perspective. I learned that Quartet Muartet's album "Dokuz Parça" was described as outstanding, with one listener noting similarities to Steely Dan and another sensing influences of National Health. It did not surprise me at all to read that, in a concert review of a project featuring Quartet Muartet members (mÖE), Volkan Öktem's drumming and the group's ability to blend genres were warmly praised. It made me happy to read that Volkan Öktem's live performances and drum solos are described as awe-inspiring and captivating.
His Place in Academic Studies
I have discovered that Volkan Öktem's musical career and work have also attracted a certain amount of interest in academic circles. The fact that he is mentioned among the leading Turkish drummers in a master's thesis on the historical development of the drums in Turkish popular music, in my view, highlights his importance in the field of Turkish musicology. The inclusion on his own official website of a drum transcription of Laco Tayfa's piece "Atmaca" suggests to me an interest in the analysis of his drumming technique. The fact that a live-performance video by the MadenÖktemErsönmez group was produced by Istanbul Bilgi University's Faculty of Communication also suggests a connection with academic institutions. I noticed that at Galatasaray University there is a faculty member with the surname "Öktem" whose email address is listed, although no direct link with Volkan Öktem is mentioned. In light of the available sources, I think the number of comprehensive academic studies specifically devoted to Volkan Öktem's work is limited. Even so, it gladdens me that his role and influence within the context of Turkish popular music are being acknowledged in academic work.
His Position as an Artist in World Music
I see Volkan Öktem as an artist who holds an important place on international music platforms. It impressed me to learn that he has performed at prestigious jazz festivals and venues in many countries, including the United States, Austria, Germany and France. His collaborations with many international jazz musicians, including Grammy-winning artists, demonstrate, in my view, his worldwide standing. I take his tours through Europe with Tarkan as a sign that he is recognised not only within the jazz world but also by a much wider pop-music audience. I see the fact that he is endorsed by international musical-instrument brands such as Yamaha Drums, Zildjian Cymbals, Evans Drumheads and Lewitt Microphones as clear evidence of his standing and influence in the global drumming community. The fact that Zildjian has produced signature drumsticks for him and Yamaha has designed a special snare-drum model for him I regard as one of the strongest indications of the important place he occupies on the international drumming scene.
Conclusion
I have followed with admiration Volkan Öktem's many-sided career, stretching from his earliest musical steps in İzmir and Ankara to Istanbul's vibrant music scene and beyond into the international arena. His original approach to blending traditional Turkish music with jazz and other genres, his extensive work with Turkish pop artists, and his collaborations with international musicians have, in my view, earned him a respected place both in Turkey and on the world music stage. I see his fusion of musical traditions as a versatile and innovative drummer, together with his major contributions to both Turkish and world music, as the foundation of a lasting legacy. I hope that future research will focus on subjects such as a detailed analysis of his drumming style, the impact of his fusion work on the Turkish music scene, or a comparative study of his collaborations across different genres.
